The Fortaleza de São Tiago features thick stone walls and defensive structures positioned strategically along the coastline of Funchal, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Built in 1614 under the direction of royal master builder Jerónimo Jorge, the fortress served as a crucial defense point against corsair attacks on Funchal.
The fortress contains exhibition spaces that present collections related to maritime history and regional heritage through artifacts and historical documents.
Visitors can reach the fortress by following the coastal promenade from central Funchal, with regular opening hours from Tuesday through Sunday.
The structure incorporates architectural elements from both Portuguese and Moorish traditions, visible in its geometric patterns and construction techniques.
