Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, Santarém, Cathedral structure in Santarém, Portugal.
Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral is a Mannerist structure with symmetrical proportions located at Praça Sá da Bandeira in central Santarém. The building combines active worship spaces with a museum section that occupies part of the adjacent episcopal palace wing.
The building was originally constructed as a Jesuit church in 1711 on the site of a former royal palace. It gained cathedral status in 1975 with the establishment of the Santarém Diocese.
The cathedral serves as a spiritual center where the local Catholic community gathers for worship and celebrates religious occasions throughout the year. Its presence on the main square makes it a focal point for faith-based traditions and community gatherings in daily life.
The cathedral sits on a main square in the heart of the city and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. Visitors should dress appropriately when entering during active worship services.
The structure incorporates salvaged materials and architectural elements from the Alcazaba Nova, an abandoned medieval palace that had remained unused since the reign of King John II. This creative reuse connects the site's layered past with its current form.
