Torre de Lapela

Torre de Lapela is a square-shaped fortified tower on the left bank of the Minho River, constructed from solid stone walls with a clear defensive design. The structure dominates the surrounding landscape and was built to offer commanding views across the border region.

Construction began in the 12th century as part of royal border defense against expansion from Galicia. The building experienced major transformations later that reflected how the region's political and military boundaries shifted over time.

The name comes from the nearby village of Lapela and reflects this region's role as a border defense stronghold. Local residents viewed it as a crucial watchtower that protected family safety and trade along the river.

The site is accessible by car and situated near the village of Troporiz in the Monção region. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since access involves walking across uneven terrain.

Part of the structure was dismantled later and its material reused for another fortification nearby. This explains why only certain sections of the original construction remain visible today.
