Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War, War memorial in Entrecampos Square, Lisbon, Portugal

The Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War rises approximately 12 meters high, combining limestone at its base with bronze elements in the upper section. The structure displays detailed bronze figures representing civilians defending their nation.

The monument was built following a 1908 competition established to commemorate Portuguese resistance during the conflict. Its official inauguration took place in 1932, completing this major memorial project.

The monument displays twelve shields representing towns involved in the conflict, with a central figure representing Portugal at its heart. These symbols honor the local resistance against occupation by foreign forces.

The monument sits at the boundary between the Alvalade and Avenidas Novas districts, serving as a clear landmark near Campo Grande. Visitors can freely approach the site during daylight hours and view it from all angles.

Inscriptions on the monument document the popular uprisings of June 1808, when ordinary people took up arms against occupation. These details preserve the history of civilians rather than soldiers alone.
