Moita do Ribatejo bullring, praça de toiros na Moita
Moita do Ribatejo bullring is a round arena with a sandy floor surrounded by stone or concrete seating that accommodates over five thousand spectators. The structure has a traditional design with stands arranged to provide views of the central ring where events are held.
The first bullring was built in 1872 as Praca da Caldeira and served for 75 years until safety concerns led to its closure in 1947. The current venue was opened on July 16, 1950, after the local society Sociedade Moitense de Tauromaquia purchased land and oversaw its construction.
The name honors Daniel Nascimento, a renowned bullfighter from Moita born in 1887. This place functions as a gathering point where local families and residents experience a tradition that has shaped the town's identity for generations.
The venue is located in central Moita on Avenida Dr. Teófilo Braga and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors can find basic facilities nearby such as refreshment stands and shaded seating areas, especially during the September festival season.
The arena was designed by architect Cabeça Padrão and opened in 1950 to continue the bullfighting tradition after the original venue closed. Bullfighting in Moita traces back to at least 1837, when local festivities first included bull runs during the Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem celebrations.
