Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Mércules

Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Mércules is a late medieval church near Castelo Branco, featuring a single nave structure with Gothic elements throughout. The entrance is marked by three archivolts and lateral Gothic portals, while the interior is lined with Hispano-Arabic tiles.

The Order of the Temple built this structure at the close of the 14th century as an expression of their religious mission in the region. The site received official status as a building of public interest in 1959.

The sanctuary is dedicated to a patroness and serves as the setting for a local religious celebration that draws pilgrims and worshippers after springtime. The events span several days and reflect the deep connection between the place and the surrounding community.

The location sits about three kilometers from Castelo Branco's city center and provides external parking for visitors. The site is easily accessible by vehicle and offers good conditions for a visit.

The name Mércoles derives from the Roman god Mercury, revealing that an ancient Roman temple once occupied this sacred site. The place was later transformed into a Christian sanctuary while preserving its original name.
