Ponte Velha de Castro Laboreiro, bridge in Castro Laboreiro e Lamas de Mouro, Portugal
Ponte Velha de Castro Laboreiro is a medieval granite bridge crossing the Laboreiro River with a single rounded arch, measuring about 6 meters in length and 5 meters in height. The structure built from local stone shows the regional building style and directly connects both riverbanks.
The structure was built between the 15th and 16th centuries as part of important trade routes connecting Castro Laboreiro with surrounding communities. It enabled regular exchange of goods and people across the area for centuries.
The bridge shows medieval craft techniques in its narrow passageway and traditional granite stonework typical of northern Portuguese building styles. Visitors today can see how local craftspeople labor-intensively shaped stone into a functional structure.
The bridge is located in Castro Laboreiro's center near the former GNR post and is easy to reach on foot. It forms part of an interpretative trail within Peneda-Gerês National Park and can be visited during hiking routes.
The structure has no side railings and sits directly above a waterfall, making it a remarkable engineering feat for its time. Ancient mills stand along the left riverbank, showing how water power was once used in the valley.
