Balta Albă

Balta Albă is a nature reserve located across Buzău and Brăila counties featuring a natural lake surrounded by peat bogs and grasslands. The area encompasses diverse habitats that support wildlife throughout the year.

The reserve received official protection status through law in 2000, representing a key milestone in Romanian environmental conservation. This designation helped preserve the site's ecological role and safeguard its natural features.

The site lies along a major bird migration route connecting Europe and Africa, hosting thousands of species each year as they travel between continents. Visitors can observe diverse bird populations during migration seasons as they stop to feed and rest in the wetlands.

The reserve is accessible via National Road DN22 connecting Buzău and Brăila, with observation points situated around the lake. Visit during migration seasons to see the greatest variety of bird species in the area.

The lake contains mineral-rich water with therapeutic mud deposits that have been used for health treatments since 1847. These special properties make it one of the few mineral-rich lakes of this kind in the region.
