Mediana, Ancient Roman complex in Niš, Serbia
Mediana is an ancient Roman complex near Niš featuring remains of residential buildings, thermal baths, storage structures for grain, and other facilities spread across the site. The ruins lie close to the Nišava River and show the layout and construction typical of a large estate from late antiquity.
The estate was founded between 306 and 337 as an imperial property and served as an important administrative center for the Roman state. It was destroyed in 441 by Hunnic forces and subsequently abandoned.
The floor mosaics and wall paintings here show how Roman families decorated their homes and what art they valued in daily life. Walking through, you notice the craftsmanship and taste of the people who lived on this estate.
The archaeological park is accessible to visitors with marked pathways and information panels in several languages throughout the grounds. Protective structures shield the fragile mosaics and help you navigate the expansive area.
The estate was not just a residence but also served as a tax collection and food distribution hub that supplied the army and imperial court. This dual function made it a vital node in late Roman administration across the region.
