Lyudinovo

Lyudinovo stretches along Lake Lompad, which forms behind a dam built on the Nepolot River about 188 kilometers (117 miles) southwest of Kaluga. Two railway stations serve the town and connect it to Moscow and Belarus, while the P-68 highway runs through to link neighboring areas.

A village first mentioned in 1626 became the foundation for this settlement, which grew into an industrial center after Evdokim Demidov built two dams on the Nepolot River during the 1700s. These water-powered facilities transformed the area into a major manufacturing hub.

The town center hosts regular markets where craftspeople display regional goods and share traditional production methods with visitors. These gatherings reflect how local trades have remained part of daily life across generations.

The town is easiest to reach by train, with two stations offering regular service to Moscow and Belarus. The flat terrain and good road connections make it straightforward to explore the surrounding area on foot or by local transport.

In 1841 the town manufactured Russia's first railway rails for the Nikolaevskaya line, and by 1858 it had produced the country's first steamships. These achievements made the settlement a birthplace of transport innovations during the 1800s.
