Megion, Industrial city in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia.
Megion is a town on the right bank of the Ob in Khanty-Mansi region of western Siberia. Built-up streets run for several kilometers parallel to the river.
The settlement began in 1810 as a small community and remained little more than a village for over a century and a half. After oil was found in the early 1960s, population grew rapidly.
The name comes from a Khanty word for bend, referring to the river curve where the town sits. Today oil extraction shapes daily routines, and buildings reflect this working purpose.
The nearest major connection lies about half an hour away toward Nizhnevartovsk, which offers air links to Russian cities. Winter clothing is essential for visits between October and April.
In summer nights stay light enough to read outdoors without artificial lighting. In winter daytime shows barely more than twilight.
