Chimgi-Tura, Medieval archaeological site in Tyumen, Russia
Chimgi-Tura is an archaeological site in Tyumen containing the remains of a medieval fortified settlement built with earthen structures. The defensive works are still visible today and show how the settlement was organized.
The settlement was founded as the capital of the Tyumen Khanate in the 13th and 14th centuries and served as a regional center. The inhabitants left the place decades before Ermak's arrival, marking the end of an independent period.
The artifacts found here show how people from different backgrounds lived and traded together in this place. Objects from different periods tell the story of this shared past.
The site lies outside the city and is easiest to reach by local transportation or organized tour. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the ground is accessible and easy to explore.
The name Chimgi-Tura comes from the Siberian Tatar language and means 'willow city,' reflecting the natural surroundings of the place. This word preserves the linguistic memory of the people who once lived here.
