Mask of Sorrow

The Mask of Sorrow stands 15 meters tall on Krutaya Hill, featuring a concrete face with one eye covered by prison bars and the other shedding tears.

The monument, unveiled in 1996, commemorates thousands of prisoners who lost their lives in Soviet labor camps throughout the Kolyma region during Stalin's regime.

Bronze figures of a weeping woman and a crucified prisoner on the rear side of the monument represent the deep impact of political persecution on Russian society.

Visitors can climb 100 steps to reach the memorial, passing by concrete blocks inscribed with names of major Kolyma labor camps along the way.

The monument incorporates religious symbols including Orthodox crosses, the Star of David, and a crescent moon, carved into surrounding boulders to represent different faiths.
