Construction started in 1951, and on June 27, 1954, this installation became the first nuclear power plant to connect to an electrical grid worldwide.
The facility represents a turning point in nuclear technology, marking the transition from military applications to civilian power generation in the Soviet Union.
The plant generated enough electricity to power 2,000 homes until its decommissioning in 2002, after which it continued operations as a research facility.
The reactor utilized an innovative channel design with uranium fuel enriched to 5 percent, establishing foundations for future Soviet nuclear power technologies.
