Bolshoye Yarovoye, Salt lake in Altai Krai, Russia
Bolshoye Yarovoye is a salt lake located in the Kulunda Plain of Western Siberia with an oval shape. The body of water reaches depths of around 8 meters and covers a substantial surface area.
The lake formed through natural geological processes in the Kulunda Plain. During the Soviet era, the Altaikhimprom company extracted bromine from the mineral-rich waters for industrial use.
The lake serves as a scientific research site where specialists study magnetic properties and sediments to understand regional climate patterns through millennia.
The water level fluctuates throughout the year depending on rainfall and seasonal patterns. Visiting conditions vary with the weather, so plan your visit accordingly.
The water contains salt concentrations around 110 grams per liter, creating an extremely saline environment. This high salinity allows brine shrimp to thrive, leaving dormant eggs in the lake sediment.
