Gogol Center

The Gogol Center stands in a renovated building at 8A Kazakova Street and includes several stages and exhibition spaces for different artistic presentations. The interiors combine classic theatre architecture with modern elements, allowing flexible use for performances and installations.

The house began in 1925 as a drama and comedy theatre for railway workers and received the name of writer Nikolai Gogol in 1935. In June 2022, the final performance took place before its conversion into the Nikolai Gogol Drama Theatre.

The name honors Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, whose works shaped Russian literature and whose humor and social critique continue to resonate today. Visitors often see references in the foyer to his best-known plays, which define the spirit of the house.

The center sits in central Moscow and is easy to reach by public transport. Performances and events happen throughout the season, so checking the current program before your visit is worthwhile.

The building originally served railway employees as a cultural venue, reflecting the early Soviet tradition of bringing art into working communities. This background still shapes the identity today as an open house for a broad audience.
