Клименецкий Свято-Троицкий монастырь, Orthodox monastery on Bolshoy Klimenetsky Island, Russia
Klimenetsky Holy Trinity Monastery is a complex of stone and wooden churches located on the northern part of Lake Onega. The various religious structures are distributed across the island and form a multi-building ensemble with different architectural styles.
The monastery was founded in 1520 by Saint Ioan Klimenetsky and received agricultural lands and fishing rights directly from Ivan the Terrible. This powerful support helped establish and strengthen the monastery during the 1500s.
The monastery bears the name of Saint Ioan Klimenetsky, whose tomb lies near the stone church of Saints Zachary and Elizabeth. Visitors can sense the spiritual connection between the founder and the religious buildings that still stand at this location.
The site is located on an island and requires a boat trip to reach it, so check access conditions beforehand. The visit works best during warmer months when weather is more stable and water crossing is easier.
The monastery sits on the largest island of Lake Onega and is protected as part of a nature reserve. This status makes it a rare place where religious history and nature protection coexist.
