Krasnopresnenskaja Observatory MSU

The Krasnopresnenskaja Observatory is an astronomical facility with a circular tower and a two-story wooden observer house situated within Moscow State University grounds. The complex preserves historical telescopes and instruments used for celestial research over many decades.

The observatory began operations in 1831 following a proposal from Dmitri Perevóschikov to establish the facility. Since then it has served continuously as a center for research into celestial bodies and cosmic phenomena.

The facility functions as a working space where researchers study celestial mechanics and solar activity. Visitors can observe how the buildings serve the daily rhythm of the university's scientific work.

The facility is located within the university campus and visiting may require permission or a guided tour. It is advisable to check with the university beforehand since access can be restricted and hours may vary.

One of the most remarkable instruments on the site is a 15-inch double astrograph telescope dating from the early research period. This telescope demonstrates the level of astronomical equipment that researchers had at their disposal and how technology evolved over time.
