Kurils Nature Reserve

The Kurils Nature Reserve spans 65,861 hectares across Kunashir Island and the Lesser Kuril Chain, featuring volcanic formations, dense forests, and marine ecosystems.

The Russian government established this protected area on February 10, 1984, to safeguard the natural processes and genetic diversity of southern Kuril Islands.

The reserve territory contains 66 archaeological sites documenting ancient human settlements and Japanese structures, reflecting the historical presence of different communities.

Access to the reserve requires special permits, and visitors must follow strict guidelines to protect the delicate ecosystems of volcanic landscapes and wildlife habitats.

The reserve hosts 227 bird species, 29 mammal species, and 107 vascular plant varieties listed in various conservation registries, including the Russian Red Book.
