Magadan Nature Reserve

Magadan Nature Reserve spans four sectors covering approximately 883,817 hectares along the Sea of Okhotsk. The reserve includes coastal zones, mountainous terrain, forest areas, and islands that support diverse wildlife and plant species.

The reserve was established in 1982 to protect the natural landscapes and wildlife of the Russian Far East. This designation helped safeguard one of the country's most untouched regions from industrial development.

Archaeological sites on the Koni Peninsula show how Koryak communities adapted to life in this harsh northern region over many centuries. Visitors can still observe remains of these settlements and how they were built to withstand the local environment.

Access to the protected areas requires special permits and is only possible through organized boat tours or guided river expeditions. Visitors should check with authorities beforehand and arrange trips with established local operators.

The Yam Islands host massive seabird colonies numbering in the millions, including rare species such as auklets, guillemots, and puffins. These breeding grounds represent some of the most important bird concentrations in the region.
