Dekabrchilar rafiqalari yodgorligi, Bronze memorial complex in Tobolsk, Russia.
The Monument to the Wives of the Decembrists is a bronze memorial in Tobolsk, Russia, built around a rotunda topped with a standing female figure in 19th-century dress. It stands near a cemetery where several of the women it honors are buried.
The memorial was built in 2008 to mark Tobolsk's 420th anniversary and to honor eleven women who followed their exiled husbands to Siberia after the failed 1825 uprising. Most of them never returned to Saint Petersburg and spent the rest of their lives in the region.
The women honored here came from noble Russian families and gave up their status to follow their husbands into exile. Tobolsk became a permanent home for several of them, and their presence shaped the cultural life of the city for decades.
The memorial stands on Semena Remezova Street and is freely accessible at any time of day. If you also want to visit the nearby cemetery, it is best to go during daylight hours.
The bronze figure was made by sculptors from Perm, a city far to the west of Tobolsk, brought in specifically for this commission. The rotunda surrounding the statue draws on classical Russian memorial forms but was cast using modern techniques.
