Uspensky monastery, Oryol, Eastern Orthodox monastery in Oryol, Russia.
The Uspensky Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery set on a hill in Oryol, Russia, with several religious buildings grouped on the same grounds. These include the Dormition Church, the Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral, and the small Trinity Church.
The monastery was founded in 1673 after a fire destroyed an earlier religious house in Oryol. It was closed and demolished in the 1920s, then rebuilt from the 1990s onward when religious life returned to the site.
The monastery serves as a spiritual center where Eastern Orthodox services and rituals take place regularly, drawing people from the local community. It shapes the religious life of Oryol through its ongoing role in the diocese.
The monastery sits on Ulitsa Yermolova in Oryol and is open during the day. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees, as religious services are held here on a regular basis.
All the buildings visible today were constructed between 1996 and 2011, making the entire monastery newer than many of its visitors. The site was laid out on the foundations of the original complex, so the historic location was kept even though nothing of the old structure survived.
