Falun Mine

The underground network extends 600 meters deep, with passages and chambers carved through centuries of copper extraction in the mountain of Stora Kopparberget.

During the 17th century, the mine supplied two-thirds of European copper production and employed 1000 workers, making it Sweden's largest industrial workplace.

The mining operations influenced Swedish architecture through Falu red paint, derived from mining byproducts and applied to wooden buildings across the country.

Visitors descend 67 meters underground through 400 steps during guided tours, where temperatures remain at 5 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

The Great Pit, Stora Stöten, formed when parts of the mine collapsed on Midsummer 1687, creating a massive crater without causing any casualties.
