Boxholm Municipality

Boxholm Municipality is an administrative region in Östergötland County in southeastern Sweden. The area consists of villages, forests, lakes, and farmland, with several small towns serving as local centers.

The region was settled by Vikings, as shown by seven preserved runestones dating from 800 to 1000 AD. These artifacts reveal a long human presence in this southeastern Swedish territory.

The municipality is home to churches built in the 12th and 13th centuries that reflect how Christianity took root in this region. These buildings still shape the local landscape and serve as gathering places for the community.

The area is best explored by car since villages are spread across several kilometers. Allow time for driving between different locations and enjoying the rural landscape.

The name comes from an islet owned by Arvid Stenbock in the 16th century, with 'holm' meaning a geographical feature in Old Norse. This etymological link shows how ancient language shaped the place names we see today.
