Sommen

Lake Sommen is a freshwater lake situated between Östergötland and Småland. The water body contains numerous islands scattered across its surface and supports diverse fish populations.

During the 16th century, a Danish military force used the frozen surface of this lake to retreat and later reach a nearby town. This crossing played a role in regional military movements of that era.

The traditional sommaskep boats of Lake Sommen feature longer stems than typical Swedish vessels, designed specifically for navigation in these waters.

Local mythology attributes the formation of Lake Sommen to a cow named Urkon, who carved out the basin with her hooves during an episode of fury.
