Vadstena Municipality, Administrative district in Östergötland County, Sweden.
Vadstena Municipality is an administrative area in Östergötland County, in southern Sweden, situated along the eastern shore of Lake Vättern. It covers the town of Vadstena and the surrounding countryside, including farmland, forests, and protected natural areas.
The municipality was merged with Motala in 1974 as part of a national reform, then restored as a separate entity in 1980. Long before that, Vadstena had been a major religious centre in medieval Sweden, shaped largely by the abbey founded there in the 14th century.
The Rogslösa Church has stone carvings with motifs linked to Celtic art, which stand out from the usual Romanesque decoration found in Swedish churches. These carvings draw visitors interested in early medieval craftsmanship and are easy to examine up close inside the church.
The town of Vadstena is the main starting point for visiting the area, with most sites within walking distance of each other near the lake. Summer is the most convenient season, as the churches are generally open and the paths through the nature reserves are easy to follow.
The Ombergsliden nature reserve contains lime-rich marshes where certain plant species grow that are rarely found elsewhere in the region. Close by, the Kastad kulle Torrang site has the opposite conditions, with dry rocky ground that supports a very different set of plants, making the two spots a striking contrast to visit together.
