Sandhammaren, Sandy beach and cape in Ystad Municipality, Sweden.
Sandhammaren is a cape on the southeastern coast of Skåne, Sweden, known for its wide sandy beach and dune landscape along the Baltic Sea. Behind the shore, pine forests line the dunes and form a clear boundary between the coast and the inland.
The area was once dominated by moving sand dunes that threatened the surrounding land over several centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries, pine trees were deliberately planted to hold the dunes in place, which gradually shaped the coast into what it looks like now.
Sandhammaren has separate areas for clothed and naturist bathing, which reflects how Sweden approaches the shared use of coastal spaces. Visitors from both sides of the divide tend to settle into a relaxed, unwritten routine that gives the beach a easy, open feel.
The beach is easy to reach by car, with parking and restroom facilities available nearby during the warmer months. Going early in the morning or later in the afternoon tends to mean fewer people and a better experience along the shore.
Sandhammaren is known for strong and unpredictable sea currents that made it one of the most hazardous points for ships along the Swedish coast for centuries. This danger led to the early construction of a lighthouse nearby, which still stands today.
