Ellinge Castle, Medieval castle in Eslöv Municipality, Sweden
Ellinge Castle is a whitewashed manor house surrounded by a square moat, set within the flat agricultural landscape of Eslöv Municipality in southern Sweden. The estate groups together the main house, several outbuildings, gardens, and stretches of farmland and forest.
The estate traces its origins to the 11th century, when it was founded by a noble family, and changed hands in the early 1200s. Over the following centuries the buildings were altered several times, though the moat and the whitewashed exterior have remained recognizable features.
Ellinge sits in the middle of farmland that is still actively worked, giving the estate a living, grounded character rather than that of a museum. Visitors often notice how the surrounding fields and the old buildings form a single working whole.
A car is the most practical way to reach the estate, and the drive from Malmö takes around 30 minutes. Since the castle is used for private events as well as visits and other activities, it is worth checking ahead to find out what will be accessible on a given day.
The estate houses a distillery that produces organic vodka and gin, and visitors can watch the process and taste the finished products on site. It is one of the few cases where a historic manor in this part of Sweden combines traditional farming with small-scale spirits production.
