Aaltohuset

Aaltohuset is a mixed-use building at the corner of Kungsgatan and Bergslagsvägen with distinctive blue ceramic tiles across its facade. The structure contains shops, offices, and apartments stacked together, creating a busy ground level with residential and commercial spaces above.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed this building between 1957 and 1961 as a commission from local businessman Ernst Sundh. It stands as one of only two buildings Aalto created in Sweden, making it a rare example of his work outside Finland and a marker of modernist influence in the region.

The blue ceramic tiles from Finland that cover the facade tell a story of design crossing borders during the 1950s. These tiles remain visible today as a reminder of how this corner of Avesta connected to broader Scandinavian artistic movements.

Visit during business hours to see the shops and offices in use, which gives a real sense of how the place functions today. The corner location makes it easy to find and access on foot, with parking available nearby.

Stefan Sundh, a relative of the original builder, purchased the building in 2003 and has worked to preserve it for the future. His involvement ties the building's past to its present, keeping family heritage alive through careful maintenance and planning.
