Gamla bron, Steel bridge in Umeå Municipality, Sweden
Gamla bron is a steel bridge spanning 301 meters across the Ume River that connects different parts of Umeå Municipality. The structure features multiple arched spans and is built entirely of steel to carry traffic safely across the water.
The bridge was built in 1863 and replaced earlier ferries and ice roads that residents used to cross the Ume River. Between 1894 and 1895, wooden components were replaced with steel construction to increase durability and support growing traffic.
The bridge represents a turning point in Umeå's development, marking the transition from isolated communities to an interconnected municipality in northern Sweden.
The bridge is open to both pedestrians and vehicles, providing a direct crossing over the river. Visitors can enjoy the best views in clear weather, though conditions may be slippery during winter months.
Before construction, residents crossed the river in winter by walking on frozen ice roads that formed naturally on the water. This seasonal method of crossing was a common practice in the community before the permanent bridge was built.
