Old Uppsala Church

The stone church stands on elevated ground with a central tower, featuring medieval wooden sculptures and three distinct crucifixes from different centuries.

Originally constructed in 1130 over a former pagan temple site, the church served as Sweden's first archbishopric until 1273 when it moved to present-day Uppsala.

The church marks the transition from Norse religious practices to Christianity in Sweden, with its location previously housing wooden statues of Odin, Thor, and Freyr.

The church maintains regular opening hours, offers guided tours, and includes wheelchair access throughout the building and cemetery grounds.

The church contains preserved chalk paintings from the 15th century and houses the original burial site of Swedish King Eric IX.
