City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec, Administrative division in northern Slovenia
The City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec is an administrative region in northern Slovenia situated between Mount Uršlja gora and the Pohorje mountain range, where the Mislinja and Suhodolnica rivers meet. The area spans 22 settlements and provides various social and health services to its residents.
The area was settled in Roman times under the name Colatio before receiving its first written mention in 1091 under the rule of the Counts of Andechs. This early reference marks the beginning of a long history that shaped the city through the centuries.
The city hosts the Koroška Regional Museum and Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts, where visitors can explore regional artworks and contemporary exhibitions. These institutions shape the cultural life of the place and reveal what the area values from its past and present.
Visitors should be aware that the area is hilly and nestled between mountains, meaning paths can be steep and sturdy footwear is important. The presence of two rivers makes the landscape lush and green, and rain can make certain spots wet or slippery.
The city has been recognized by the United Nations as a Messenger of Peace, making it the only such designated center in Slovenia. This distinction appears each year through special celebrations of United Nations Day held throughout the streets.
