Olimje Castle, Franciscan monastery in Olimje, Slovenia.
Olimje Castle is a Franciscan monastery with a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, four wings surrounding a courtyard, and defensive walls. The buildings show Renaissance architecture features with white walls and a layout typical of that period.
The original castle dates from 1000 and belonged to the counts von Peilestein before Count Tattenbach rebuilt it in Renaissance style around 1550. This transformation was part of a broader trend to modernize fortified structures across the region.
The monastery is known for its historic pharmacy decorated with frescoes by Anton Lerchinger depicting biblical scenes and medicinal plants. The decorated rooms tell visitors about the connection between faith and healing practices at this place.
Visitors can explore the monastery and join guided tours of the old pharmacy, where herbal products are still sold today. The courtyard is easy to access, and the church can be visited, though checking current opening times beforehand is recommended.
The sacristy is covered with complete wall paintings from 1740 by monk Ivan Ranger depicting religious and pharmaceutical themes. These frescoes are rarely preserved so well and show the artistic talent that was present in this monastery.
