Veliki Tabor Castle, Stone fortress in Desinić, Croatia
Veliki Tabor is a fortress in Desinić with a pentagonal shape rising at 270 meters elevation. The structure connects four semi-circular Renaissance towers through extensive curtain walls that span approximately 225 meters.
Construction of the fortress began around 1500 under the Hungarian noble Ráttkay family, who controlled the stronghold. The family defended it against Ottoman attacks until losing power in 1793.
The castle hosts an international short film festival since 2002, presenting contemporary arts within its stone walls. Visitors can experience modern creative work set against a historical backdrop.
Visitors will find a fully renovated structure with exhibitions covering medieval history of northwest Croatia. The elevated location offers good orientation and allows access to various areas of the fortress.
Local folklore tells of Veronika, executed for witchcraft after falling in love with Count Fridrik. Her remains are said by legend to lie hidden somewhere within the castle walls.
