Open air museum Staro selo, Kumrovec

Staro selo is an open-air museum in Kumrovec featuring roughly 40 restored traditional houses and farm buildings made from earth and wood. The structures line the Sutla River valley and display how a rural settlement once appeared.

Development of this place began in 1947 when visitors arrived to see the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito. This sparked efforts to preserve the village and restore its historic buildings.

The place displays traditional craftsmanship including blacksmithing, pottery, and textile weaving that reflect how rural families lived and worked. Visitors observe the skills people once used to make everyday objects by hand.

The place is best reached by private transportation since only two daily buses connect Zagreb and Kumrovec on weekdays. Plan for roughly 75 minutes of travel time to reach it.

Each restored house contains period-specific furnishings and tools alongside life-sized figures showing everyday scenes and activities. Information panels in several languages explain regional customs and the craft techniques visitors see displayed throughout each room.
