Cesargrad, Medieval castle ruins in Klanjec, Croatia
Cesargrad is a stone fortress located on Cesargrad Hill at roughly 471 meters elevation. It overlooks the Sutla River valley and the border between Croatia and Slovenia.
The fortress was granted to Count Herman of Celje by King Sigismund in 1399, making it a key control point for the region. It was later destroyed and rebuilt by the Erdödy family.
The ruins show how a medieval fortress was organized, with walls that blend different architectural periods. Visitors can still see the structure that once housed nobles and their families.
The site is reached by walking uphill, and paths can vary depending on the season. It is best to wear sturdy shoes and check weather conditions before visiting.
During the Peasants Revolt of 1573, the fortress was captured and set on fire by rebels. This event marked a major turning point in the place's history.
