Ančnikovo gradišče, Archaeological site in Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenia.
Ančnikovo gradišče is a fortified settlement located at 750 meters above sea level near Slovenska Bistrica. Steep rocks protect the site on the northeastern and eastern sides, while defensive walls remain visible on other sections.
The settlement was established in ancient times and inhabited through the 6th century. Remains from the 4th century show late Roman and early medieval fortifications.
The bronze statues of Mercury and Apollo discovered here show what goods and beliefs the ancient inhabitants knew. Such objects help archaeologists understand how people lived and what they valued.
Visitors can reach the site by hiking through Bistriški Gorge or driving to Jurišna vas na Pohorju, then walking a short distance. The area is wooded and the ground can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Excavations in 1984 revealed blacksmith tools, weapons, coins, and ceramics that provide clues about daily life. After that, the forest gradually overtook the site and the walls deteriorated.
