Cukrarna

Cukrarna is an art gallery building in Ljubljana with an unconventional inner structure that defines its character. Inside, four white cube-shaped exhibition spaces hang from a steel framework suspended from the roof, which allows them to float freely without touching the outer walls.

The building began as a sugar refinery in 1828 and became the largest of its kind in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the 1800s. This industrial past shaped the site for many decades before its function changed dramatically in later years.

The space has long attracted artists and thinkers who gathered here to share ideas and work. This artistic tradition continues today through the exhibitions and events hosted within its walls.

The building sits in the city center and is easily reached on foot, with clear paths to and around the structure. Visitors should allow time to explore all the exhibition spaces, as the venue covers a substantial area.

The renovation preserved more than 300 original windows from the factory era, which remain part of the building's outer appearance today. These windows link the site's industrial past with its present role as a contemporary art venue.
