Castra Gerulata, Ancient Roman military camp in Rusovce, Slovakia
Castra Gerulata is an archaeological site in the Rusovce district of Bratislava, where the remains of a Roman military camp have been uncovered. Foundation walls, stone columns, a ceremonial altar, and burial grounds are visible across the excavation area.
The camp was established in the 1st century as a Roman frontier post and was used by different military units over several centuries. It was destroyed and rebuilt more than once as the demands of defending this border changed over time.
The museum in Bratislava displays everyday objects found at the site, including jewelry, pottery, and coins used by soldiers stationed here. Looking at these items gives a direct sense of daily life at the far northern edge of the Roman Empire.
The excavation site is in Rusovce while the dedicated museum is in central Bratislava, so a visit to both works best as a combined outing. Outdoor ground is uneven in places, so wear sturdy shoes and plan for warm weather if you want to walk the site comfortably.
Excavations carried out in the 1960s showed that two separate forts were built at this location one after the other, with the first abandoned after roughly 100 years. The second fort was laid out on a slightly different footprint, which is still visible today in the way the uncovered walls are arranged.
