Beckov Castle, Medieval castle in Nové Mesto nad Váhom District, Slovakia.

Beckov Castle stands on a limestone cliff overlooking the village and contains preserved defensive structures along with a Gothic chapel within its grounds. The complex displays typical features of a medieval border fortress with a central courtyard and multiple tower buildings.

The fortress was built in the 13th century as a border stronghold for the Hungarian Crown and guarded strategic trade routes in the region. A devastating fire in the 18th century damaged it severely and marked the end of its role as a functional defense post.

The fortress hosts exhibitions about regional crafts and medieval daily life, allowing visitors to understand how people once lived in such strongholds. These displays show the practical skills and routines that defined life in fortified settlements.

A walking path of about 10 to 15 minutes leads from Beckov village up to the fortress, with the route becoming steeper toward the top. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the path crosses natural stone and wooden stairs.

The fortress takes its name from a legend about Becko, a court jester who received the stronghold as a gift from a local nobleman. This unusual origin story makes the place a peculiar example of how medieval titles and lands were sometimes granted.
