Hrušov Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Tribeč Mountains, Slovakia
Hrušov Castle consists of medieval stone ruins positioned on a mountain ridge in the Tribeč Mountains at about 488 meters elevation, with wall remnants spanning across the rocky peak. The layout once included separate areas for defense and habitation that adapted to the terrain.
The castle was built in the 13th century to guard and control important trade routes crossing the mountain chain. It was destroyed when Imperial troops attacked it in 1708.
The site served as a control point for trade moving through the mountain region and shaped life in surrounding villages for centuries. Today visitors can observe how such fortifications were built and used in medieval times.
Hikers reach the ruins via marked trails starting from Skýcov village, with the ascent taking roughly one hour and requiring sturdy footwear. Spring through fall offers the best visiting conditions when paths are dry and passable.
From the walls on clear days, visitors can see both adjacent mountain chains, the Tribeč and Pohronský Inovec, which explains why this location was so valuable as a lookout post. This panoramic view was crucial for monitoring large territories.
