Tunel pod Homôľkou, Abandoned railway tunnel in District of Revúca, Slovakia.
Tunel pod Homôľkou is a railway tunnel in the Revúca highlands of Slovakia, passing through the ridge that separates the Muráň and Štítnik river valleys. The tunnel is fully intact and open along its entire length, with no tracks ever laid on the floor.
Construction began in 1941 as part of a rail connection project for the Gemer region and was largely finished by 1944. The Slovak National Uprising interrupted the work, and tracks were never laid after that.
The tunnel is used today by hikers and cyclists as a direct path between two valleys that would otherwise require a long detour. Walking through it gives a sense of moving inside a mountain, with the faint light of the two entrances visible from within.
The tunnel is open at all hours for walkers and cyclists, but the interior is completely dark, so bringing a light is necessary. The floor is flat and easy to walk on, and no special gear is needed beyond that.
Although the tunnel was fully built, it never carried a single train, making it one of the few completed railway tunnels in Europe that went straight from construction site to footpath. The two valleys it connects had no direct link before it was dug.
