Tunel pod Homôľkou, Abandoned railway tunnel in District of Revúca, Slovakia.
The tunnel under Homôľkou is a 2,401-meter-long railway tunnel that cuts through the valleys of the Muráň and Štítnik rivers in the Revúcka highlands. The passage is continuously walkable and connects two valleys directly, despite having no railroad tracks laid inside.
The project started in 1941 as part of the Gemer region connections and reached partial completion by 1944. Work was halted by the Slovak National Uprising and never resumed afterward.
The tunnel is now a place where hikers and cyclists experience a story of interrupted rail connections firsthand. Many people use it as a meeting point to explore the highland landscape together while encountering a piece of the past.
The tunnel is open around the clock for pedestrians and cyclists, but you must bring a light source since the interior is completely dark. The route is easy to walk, but lighting is necessary to move safely through.
Although the structure was fully completed, railroad tracks were never laid inside, so today it serves only as a pedestrian and cycling path. This unexpected use makes it a special link between two otherwise isolated valleys.
