Bangkok Yai District

Bangkok Yai is a residential district on the western side of the Chao Phraya River with two subdistricts. The area features residential neighborhoods connected by canals and local streets, with several temples serving as community landmarks.

The district was originally named Amphoe Hongsaram before receiving its current name in 1916. Administrative changes in following decades shaped how the area was officially organized and governed.

The area is home to several Buddhist temples where religious ceremonies and daily worship happen throughout the year. You can witness the spiritual life of locals as they visit these sacred spaces as part of their everyday routine.

The district's name comes from the Khlong Bangkok Yai, a former section of the Chao Phraya River that changed course due to canal construction. This waterway history remains visible in the network of canals and water routes that still connect the neighborhoods.
