Kecheng Bridges, Railway bridge in Yuli Township, Taiwan
Kecheng Bridges are railway structures in Yuli Township, in the Hualien County of eastern Taiwan, carrying the train line across the flat farmland of the Huadong Valley. The structures sit along the South Link or Hualien-Taitung Line, running between mountain slopes and the Pacific coast.
The railway line running through the Huadong Valley was laid during the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, when the eastern part of the island was still largely isolated. The bridges along this route have been rebuilt or reinforced several times since then to meet the demands of modern rail traffic.
The bridges pass through open farmland where rice fields stretch close to the tracks, giving train passengers an unusually direct view of everyday rural life. This proximity between the railway and the fields reflects how deeply agriculture shapes the identity of Yuli Township.
Yuli Station is a stop on the Hualien-Taitung Line, and the village center is easy to reach on foot from the platform. The bridges themselves are visible from the surrounding farmland, and the flat terrain makes it easy to walk along the tracks and fields without needing a car.
The Huadong Valley sits along a boundary between two tectonic plates, which means the ground here shifts gradually over time. This slow movement causes the bridges and the track bed to require regular adjustments so that the rails stay level and aligned.
