Starokyivska Hora, Archaeological site on Upper City Hill in Kyiv, Ukraine
Starokyivska Hora is a former settlement site on a raised plateau in central Kyiv, situated between the Dnipro and Lybid rivers. The plateau holds exposed foundations of palaces, churches, and dwellings from several centuries of occupation.
The area was already inhabited in the 6th century and grew into the political core of the Rus under Prince Volodymyr in the late 10th century. That era brought major construction across the hill, leaving behind the layers of foundations visible today.
Starokyivska Hora is seen by many locals as the symbolic heart of the city, the place where Kyiv truly began. Walking through the area, visitors can still see exposed stone foundations that hint at how densely this hill was once built up.
The ground across the site is uneven, so sturdy footwear makes the visit more comfortable. Coming during daylight hours helps with reading the exposed structures and moving around the open terrain.
The northwestern corner of the plateau is where the earliest traces of settlement from the 6th century were found, tied to the legendary founder Kyi. This small area predates the later grand constructions by several centuries.
