Verecke Pass, Mountain pass in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine
Verecke Pass is a mountain pass in southwestern Ukraine that crosses through the Inner Eastern Carpathians. The passage connects the valleys of the Latorytsia and Opir rivers at roughly 841 meters above sea level.
Hungarian tribes crossed this mountain pass in 895 AD during their migration into the Carpathian Basin. This event marked the start of Hungarian settlement in the region.
A monument from 2008 marks the historical passage and connects Hungarian and Ukrainian history at this mountain pass. Visitors find here a symbol of the long relationship between both peoples.
The pass can be reached via marked hiking trails that are open to visitors of different abilities. Winter visits need extra care due to harsh mountain weather and snow conditions.
The pass holds remnants of World War II defensive fortifications, including structures from the Árpád Line military system. These ruins tell the story of an important defensive strategy from that era.
