Museum of Folk Life, Regional folk museum in Mariupol, Ukraine.
The Museum of Folk Life in Mariupol houses collections of traditional tools, household objects, and national costumes from the diverse ethnic communities of the Azov region. The exhibits primarily date from the 18th century and document the everyday lives of these different population groups.
The museum was founded in 1989 and occupies a historical building that had previously served different purposes under Soviet administration. It was established to preserve and document the diverse cultural traditions of the different communities in the region.
The museum displays how different ethnic groups in the Azov region lived and organized their homes over time. Visitors can see the clothing, household arrangements, and daily customs of Ukrainians, Greeks, Jews, Germans, and Russians through the objects on display.
The museum is located on Georgievskaya Street and welcomes visitors on weekdays with guided tours available. It is helpful to check in advance when tours are offered, as they provide valuable context for understanding the collections.
The museum acquired additional objects in 2012, including a smoking pipe and nails from the 17th century. These rare items were discovered near the mouth of the Kalmius River and offer insights into earlier periods of the region.
