Mariupol Museum of Local Lore, Local history museum in Mariupol, Ukraine.
The Mariupol Museum of Local Lore is housed in seven exhibition halls displaying natural specimens, archaeological discoveries, and historical objects from different periods of the Donetsk region. The collection contains around 53,000 items, including materials preserved in an onsite scientific library.
The institution was founded in February 1920 by the city education department and became the first state museum in the Donetsk region. This made it an early center for preserving and studying local heritage.
The museum holds coin collections including Byzantine pieces and documents about Greek Christian settlements from the Crimean Khanate period. These objects reveal the different cultures that shaped this region.
The museum is located at 20 Georgievskaya Street and maintains a scientific library with around 17,000 volumes available for research and study. Visitors can take advantage of guided tours and educational programs offered regularly throughout the year.
The museum's research efforts contributed to the establishment of three nature reserves in the Azov region: Khomutovsky Steppe, Bilosaray Spit, and Stone Graves. This work demonstrates how the institution's scientific investigations helped protect the region's natural environment.
