Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre, Drama theatre in Mariupol, Ukraine.
The Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre was a playhouse in Mariupol, Ukraine, with white columns and a red roof. The auditorium seated 800 people and served as a central venue for performing arts in the city.
Merchant Vasily Shapovalov founded the theater in 1878, starting with performances in a barn. The venue developed into a professional institution and received academic status in 2007.
The theater became known for staging works by Ukrainian dramatists and performed both classic plays and contemporary pieces. Visitors could follow the tradition of Ukrainian stage arts over decades, reflected in a changing repertoire.
The main stage was designed for large performances, while a smaller hall served for more intimate presentations. Visitors had access to both spaces, allowing different types of shows.
In 1985, a smaller hall was added to enable more intimate performances. In March 2022, the building was destroyed by an airstrike while serving as a civilian shelter.
