Museum of Ethnography and Crafts in Lviv, Ethnographic museum at Svobody Avenue, Lviv, Ukraine
The Museum of Ethnography and Crafts in Lviv is housed in a former savings bank building on Svobody Avenue, featuring sculpted figures on its facade representing Industry and Agriculture. Inside, the collection covers folk objects, tools, textiles, and decorative items gathered from across different regions of Ukraine.
The museum was formed in 1951 when the Industrial City Museum, founded in 1874, merged with the Antiquities Museum of the Scientific Society. The building it occupies was originally built as the Galician Savings Bank in the late 19th century.
The collection brings together everyday objects from across Ukrainian regions, including woven textiles, pottery, and carved wood pieces that show how people once lived and worked. Traditional clothing stands out for how clearly it reflects local differences from one region to the next.
The museum sits on Svobody Avenue in the center of Lviv and is easy to reach on foot from most of the old town. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, and photography inside the building may require a small additional fee at the entrance.
The museum holds Ukraine's largest collection of timepieces, with around 450 clocks gathered from many different countries. The range goes from plain working mechanisms to finely crafted pieces that trace how clockmaking changed over the centuries.
